Male Infertility (Low Sperm Count, Motility, or morphology)

Acupuncture

Male infertility accounts for roughly 40-50% of infertility cases in couples. It often goes unaddressed because the focus is frequently on the female partner but male reproductive health is just as critical to conception.

What Is Male Infertility?

Male infertility is typically due to problems with sperm quantity, quality, or delivery. The three main sperm-related issues are:

  1. Low Sperm Count (Oligospermia):
Fewer than 15 million sperm per milliliter of semen.

  2. Poor Motility (Asthenospermia):
Sperm don’t swim well enough to reach and fertilize the egg.

  3. Abnormal Morphology (Teratospermia):
Misshapen sperm may be unable to penetrate the egg.

Other contributing factors can include:

  • Hormonal imbalances (low testosterone, high estrogen)

  • Varicocele (enlarged veins in the scrotum)

  • Infections

  • Environmental toxins (heat, radiation, chemicals)

  • Oxidative stress

  • Lifestyle factors: smoking, alcohol, drugs, stress, poor diet, tight underwear

Male Infertility in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

In TCM, male fertility issues are most often linked to imbalances in the Kidney system, which governs reproductive energy (Jing). Additional patterns may include:

  • Kidney Yang Deficiency: Low libido, poor sperm motility, fatigue, cold limbs

  • Kidney Yin Deficiency: Thin semen, night sweats, irritability

  • Liver Qi Stagnation: Emotional stress affecting sperm production

  • Damp-Heat Accumulation: Often related to infections or inflammation in the genitals

  • Blood or Qi deficiency: Poor vitality, weak sperm

How Acupuncture Supports Male Fertility

Acupuncture addresses both the root patterns and the sperm quality issues directly by improving systemic health and reproductive function.

Improves Sperm Parameters

  • Increases sperm count, motility, and morphology

  • Reduces DNA fragmentation in sperm

  • Lowers oxidative stress that damages sperm

Regulates Hormones

  • Balances testosterone, FSH, and LH to support healthy sperm production

Enhances Blood Flow to Reproductive Organs

  • Supports optimal testicular function and temperature regulation

Reduces Stress and Anxiety

  • High cortisol disrupts testosterone and sperm production; acupuncture lowers stress response

Detoxifies the System

  • Helps clear Damp-Heat and inflammation associated with infections or lifestyle habits

Combined Approaches:

  • Chinese herbal formulas (e.g., to tonify Kidney Jing, clear heat, or move Qi)

  • Nutritional support (zinc, CoQ10, antioxidants like vitamin C & E)

  • Lifestyle changes (exercise, no hot tubs, smoking cessation, stress reduction)

  • Supplements like L-carnitine, inositol, and omega-3s

Evidence Shows:

  • Clinical studies show acupuncture can significantly improve sperm quality within 2-3 months of treatment

  • Helps lower sperm DNA fragmentation, improving chances of natural conception or IVF success

  • Enhances overall energy, libido, and reproductive health

Male infertility is treatable, and acupuncture offers a safe, natural, and effective way to improve sperm health. By addressing both internal imbalances and external stressors, acupuncture helps enhance male reproductive function often making a big difference in a couple’s fertility journey.
