Endometriosis

Stomach Ache

Endometriosis is a chronic and often painful condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining (endometrium) grows outside the uterus, commonly on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, pelvic lining, and other nearby organs. This tissue behaves like normal endometrium: it thickens, breaks down, and bleeds with each cycle, but it has no way to exit the body, leading to inflammation, pain, and scar tissue.

Key Symptoms of Endometriosis

  • Chronic pelvic pain (often worse during menstruation)

  • Painful periods (dysmenorrhea)

  • Pain during sex, bowel movements, or urination

  • Heavy or irregular bleeding

  • Infertility

  • Fatigue, bloating, or nausea

Endometriosis in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

In TCM, endometriosis is viewed as a disorder of Blood stasis The blood is not flowing freely, leading to pain and blockage. Several patterns may be involved:

  • Blood Stasis – causes fixed, stabbing, or intense pain

  • Cold in the Uterus – leads to cramping and clots in menstrual blood

  • Qi Stagnation – related to emotional stress and tension

  • Kidney or Spleen Deficiency – weakens the body’s ability to regulate menstruation and remove buildup

How Acupuncture Can Help Endometriosis

Acupuncture aims to relieve pain, regulate the menstrual cycle, and address the root imbalances that contribute to the condition.

Reduces Pain and Inflammation

  • Releases endorphins (natural painkillers)

  • Reduces prostaglandins (chemicals that increase pain and cramping)

  • Lowers inflammation in pelvic tissues

Improves Blood and Qi Flow

  • Helps dissolve Blood stasis

  • Encourages better circulation to the uterus and reproductive organs

Regulates Hormones

  • Balances the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis

  • Stabilizes estrogen and progesterone levels, which can affect endometrial tissue growth

Supports Emotional Well-being

  • Calms the nervous system, helping reduce stress and anxiety, which can worsen symptoms

Combined Therapies in TCM

  • Herbal medicine to move Blood, warm the uterus, and reduce inflammation

  • Moxibustion (warming therapy) to dispel cold and ease pain

  • Dietary changes to reduce inflammation (e.g., avoiding dairy, sugar, and cold/raw foods)

  • Lifestyle advice to support hormonal balance and reduce stress

Clinical Research Shows:

  • Acupuncture may significantly reduce pelvic pain intensity

  • It can improve quality of life, reduce reliance on pain medications, and support fertility

  • Regular treatments are more effective when tailored to the individual’s cycle and symptoms

Acupuncture offers a gentle, drug-free approach to managing endometriosis by targeting both symptoms (pain, inflammation, hormone imbalance) and root imbalances from a TCM perspective. It’s most effective when used as part of a comprehensive, holistic plan.
